The
main scientific premise of the BabyAffect project is that the
extralexical and extralinguistic stream in childcaregiver
communication, e.g., affect, communicative intent, enhances
significantly the lexical acquisition process in early childhood both in
terms of quality (e.g., semantic categorization ability) and quantity
(rate of learning, vocabulary spurt). We intend to demonstrate this both
experimentally using statistical information extracted from
audiovisual recordings and formally using cognitive modeling of lexical
acquisition using parallel distributed model and semantic networks.
Demonstrating the connection between affect, intent and vocabulary
learning is also relevant for children with autistic spectrum disorders
and languagedelay that are often show impairments in nonverbal
communication skills. Duration: 01022014 31102015
